More Towel Day Winners!

"I love deadlines. I like the whooshing noise they make as they go by." - Douglas Adams, The Salmon of Doubt

Ok, my apologies for the delay in awarding the last prize(s) - I really thought I had everything figured out ahead of time, but apparently I did not. I could ramble on, but everyone's been waiting too long already so without further ado...

You know, it's really frustrating sometimes to think you have all contingencies planned for and then have everything go wrong at the last minute. Well, not quite everything, but enough to give me a headache when all I want to do is spread some Douglas Adams love around. That and make good on the original plan to give away the posters and not sell them on eBay. (Although, eBay didn't exist when I was mailed the posters so perhaps I could have used that as a loophole...) But I digress..

Oh, and another thing... Twitter is pretty awesome. Sure, it has it's limitations, but all in all, it is a great tool and I've met a bunch of awesome people through it. Some of them are you folk. And if I haven't followed you already, I will! One of my goals in this was to meet new and interesting people who shared the same interest in an amazing author, so I hope I don't bore you too much and we have great conversations. Who knows, maybe I'll figure out something swanky to give away next year too? But yea, Twitter is pretty swell, so I hope you folk that signed up with it just to enter the contest stick around and give it a go - and not delete your account BEFORE the prize is awarded! (Looking at you @drakejared0, you were the first drawn, but your account is no more...) So finally, on to the final winners...

And I really will write some article about running contests on the different social media platforms, the tools used, and the lessons I learned this time around. If you don't see it within a month, you have my permission to start harassing me about it. Really. Sometimes I do need that kick in the pants to get something done... *OUCH*

"A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools." - Douglas Adams, Mostly Harmless

Okay, okay - so first off thanks to Hootsuite support and RetweetRank for getting me the data I needed. I really though I have everything figured out in advance and my plan was foolproof (see above). It was painful but the job got done. I compiled the list of people who retweeted the official entry tweets, alphabetized the names, and after drawing the now-deleted account (Ticket: 1993QATR3), I drew another number(Ticket: 1999URJAH) and the winner is: @EvanPrim! Congrats dude, I'll contact you for shipping info soon!

Now the second poster - I made a list of those that caught my attention and gave entries based on the level of attention. Now there was only ONE person who submitted something that met the "about guarantee" criteria, and it was still a random pull (Ticket: 1991BJJC6). But in the end she did win, so congrats to Google+ entrant Leah Bush (and @leahshrub on Twitter) who submitted the photo of her smacking Ghostcrawler on the back of his head for what he did to rogues in patch 5.3. Follow and circle her, she's new to both, so I assume she needs to be weened from Facebook. I'll be in touch for shipping info soon!

don't panic

Again, I want to apologize for the confusion and delay in awarding these prizes - I'll be certain to plan better next time. Honestly, I wish I had enough to give them out to everyone! I appreciate feedback, so feel free to let me know what you think could have been done better, and other contest ideas. Speaking of next time, what do you think I should give away now that I'm out of posters?

Hope you all had as much fun as I did, and I'm glad to have met a bunch of new like-minded folk. :-)

Towel Day Poster Winners!

^&@(&^#@!& Twitter. So the original plan was to compile a list of everyone and randomly draw number to give away a poster and then I'd have an extra to give away for some made up reason - sucking up or whatever. Because I wasn't able to get the twitter stats yet (worst case I should get an automated report on Monday, I hope), I didn't want the Instagram and Google+ folk to have to wait so I'm splitting it up. Sorry Twitter folk, I need to wait until my tickets are responded to or the Hootsuite report comes through on Monday to give away yours.

Combining the Instagram and Google+ entries, there were 116 entries. I alphabetized and drew a number through (Ticket: 1919KSCRL) and the winner of the first poster is Chris Lutz from his Google+ entry!

Hopefully I'll have the Twitter data soon, and if the ticket process doesn't work or the Hootsuite report doesn't have all the info I need, I'll MANUALLY go through and count each retweet to get the right entries. Sorry everyone for all the problems with this, the last thing I wanted to do was disappoint folk on Towel Day. :-(

But wait, there's more! I will be giving away a third one now! I had planned to save it for next year but because of the hubbub I'll give it away when I give away the Twitter one to another lucky recipient. Because of all the extra time it took trying to get the twitter mess sorted out today, I'm running way short on time, but I will make edit and update this page later with a few more details on how that one will be given away.

Again, sorry for all the confusion with the Twitter mess. :-(

Towel Day Giveaway!

Saturday, May 25, 2013 is TOWEL DAY! What's that you say? Well if you're reading this you probably don't have to ask, but in case you don't know, it is a day of celebration and tribute to the late author Douglas Adams who wrote the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. Still in the dark? You can read about the origins of Towel Day on Wikipedia or

Any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still know where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.

So what's the free stuff you ask? Well back in 1999 (yes, you have to read this crap to get to the goods), I was able to interview the great Douglas Adams himself (albeit very briefly) about his video game, "Starship Titanic," that was just being released for the Mac and was going to be sent some promotional posters to give away. Well the posters got sent to an old address, which was then forwarded to my father's address... who promptly stuck it in the attic with other crap of mine I never got around to moving. Flash-forward to 2012, when I was digging around my father's attic looking for some crap of mine I never got around to moving and I find this poster tube containing those posters that Simon and Schuster Interactive had sworn up and down they had sent me. (Sorry Peter, I didn't mean those things about your mother.) I open up this tube, and what do I find? THESE POSTERS ARE MOTHER#^)&!NG SIGNED! (No Peter, not your mother.) So instead of listing them on eBay as suggested, I decided to do a giveaway to some lucky Douglas Adams fan. Or two. Or more. Who knows?

The poster is similar to this but someone scrawled their name all over it.

The poster is similar to this but someone scrawled their name all over it.

The prize is a poster that looks something similar to the picture to the right and is signed by Douglas Adams. I'll take a picture and post it later, but it's too late right now and I don't want to deal with fighting with rolled up posters to take a decent picture at 2AM. It has a bronze colored border to it and a bunch of the promotional info like publishers, game launch date, etc. It is about 16 "x 22" and has been sitting in a poster tube for thirteen-ish years so has that lovely curl to it. Deal with it - it's a free poster signed by Douglas Adams.

First off, non-US residents be sure to read the WINNING section and understand that YOU are responsible for shipping charges if it is much more than me shipping it to the US ($7-ish). You can enter multiple times through a few different ways:

Twitter: To enter via Twitter, you must be following @TrocarRogue and re-tweet at least one of my giveaway tweets. If you tweet them all you get that many entries. How many will I tweet? Who knows, it really depends but probably at least once per day until Towel Day. Favoriting is nice to, but won't count for the contest, but I may consider it "sucking up."

Instagram: To enter via Instagram, you must be following TrocarRogue and "like" the Towel Day images posted. Those images will be tagged "#towelday." Same deal, one entry per image, and "liking" all the other pictures of my cats won't get you extra entries, but may be considered as "sucking up." (Sorry Twitter folk, re-tweeting the links posted by Instagram won't count, but again, it's a nice "suck up" thing to do.)

Google+: Yadda yadda circle me and share the Towel Day posts etc. I haven't exactly figured that one out yet, so I'll be winging it. It will probably be counting the people who +1 and share the Towel Day posts.

Facebook: It sucks. I'm not willing to jump through whatever hoops to reactivate an account I don't want to use just to give free stuff away so suck it.

Sucking Up: I have a few posters, and may choose to give more than one away. Or not. If I do, sucking up could go a long way. But then again, it might not. If there was a guarantee, it would be some entry rule and not sucking up now wouldn't it? You can favorite tweets, like pictures of my cats, +K me for Douglas Adams, smack Ghostcrawler on the back of the head for me for what they did to rogues in 5.3 (okay, I'd about guarantee a poster for that one), or say things like "Hey, you sass that hoopy @TrocarRogue? There's a frood who really knows where his towel is." You get the idea. Be creative. Catch my attention.

Infinite Improbability: I may, however improbable, decide to have miscellaneous random contests to give away a poster for some infinitely improbable reason. Be paying attention to Twitter since that's where I tend to be most active. Was that a hint? A diversion? Improbable.

I'll be making some handy dandy spreadsheet with names and numbers then will use some online random dealio to pick the winners. Wait did I say winners? I meant winner. I'll post the winner's info on this site for them to contact me with addressee info to ship the poster to. I'll be posting names/handles so don't enter if you are undercover CIA or something. I'll pick up the tab for shipping if you are in the USA. If you are outside the USA, you can still enter, but I'll find out what the postage is, let you know, and YOU get to pay the shipping via PayPal. I'm not here to spend $50 to ship a poster to the North Pole.

Speaking of rules, there have to be some. This is a very informal contest but if it causes too much drama I'll stop the whole damn thing and pick a winner from the valid entries and they win. Again one entry per tweet/picture/circleplusthingie, and valid accounts ONLY. Don't go creating fake accounts to do this. If I think it's a fake account, I won't count it. Let's see, usual disclaimers, not worth any monetary value, you can't sue me, no warranties, I reserve the right to call this off if people start shenanigans, void where prohibited by law, decision of judge (me) is final, some assembly required, contents may settle during shipment, use only as directed.

Anyhow, that about covers it all, if I think of something else, I'll post it here. Play nice, have fun, and always know where your towel is.

UPDATE 5/22/13 @ 23:47 - Here's the pic of one of the posters.
